Old Creeper in the news

Lucy Owen's Paper Men

One of my photographs was reinterpreted in acrylic on canvas, which is an odd and unexpected honor. It's part of a very cool triptych.

Check out  Lucy Owens's Paper Men gallery at her site.

Lucy Owen's exhibition "Where the Juggalo Roam" opened in Detroit last Friday and runs until December 20th at Start Gallery.

The Gathering of the Juggalos should have been here.

The Gathering of the Juggalos should have been here.

BuzzFeed picked up my pictures of Gulliver this week and they called the place strange. Sure, I guess, but my first reaction is that the Gathering of the Juggalos is still the strangest and most wonderful place in the world.

Then it hit me. 10,000 Juggalos camping beside Gulliver's body on the side of Mount Fuji would have been fucking amazing.

The Lilliput that's now just kaput: Japanese theme park based on Gulliver's Travels that has been left to rot

Gulliver's Travels is a classic novel which has inspired legions of schoolchildren and adults with its imaginative wit and satirical undertones.

Less inspiring, however, is the abandoned Japanese theme park based on the 18th century book which was left to rot after closing down in 2001.

While driving on a virtually deserted, ice-covered highway last week, I got a call from a U.K. reporter for some deets about my trip to Japan a few years ago. I pulled over and we had a brief chat, and he ended up making me sound a whole lot more thoughtful and eloquent than I really could have been.

"It was such a momentous thing to stand in the presence of. It was the most amazing and surreal object I have ever seen. It felt so weird to lie in the palm of a giant man, while surrounded by the stunning scenery."

So, I'll just assume that I talk like that when part of my brain is frozen.

Built in the shadow of Japan’s Mt. Fuji and located about two and a half hours west of Tokyo, Gulliver’s Kingdom (based on Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels) was only open from 1997 to 2001, until it was shuttered due to poor attendance. The park was left idle and decaying, sometimes vandalized, until it was finally demolished in 2007.

The Gathering of the Juggalos is the greatest place on Earth

I went to my first Gathering in 2011, and I was hooked. I had been intending to go for years, but I have to admit that I was a little afraid of stepping into the middle of 10,000 strangers who seemed to come from an entirely other world. I regret not making the effort to go sooner, because I find the culture and the people absolutely fascinating, and have seen passionate self-expression that makes the regular world seem bland and lifeless by compassion.

Juggalos are sort of like American gypsies, hated and ostracized by the general public, but proud and united in their exclusion. Now they are even being profiled as a gang by the FBI, and in some cases, persecuted by law enforcement simply for displaying Juggalo related tattoos.

Nonetheless, it's a gang that I don't mind hanging out with from time to time. Even though I am often treated warily, being an obvious outsider, I have really encountered nothing but kindness and constant exhibition of joy at being alive, which is something that I find distinctly lacking in "the mainstream."

This year, I had the honor of getting press credentials for the Gathering via the good folks over at Doobious.org, so please head on over there to take a gander at the more detailed description of my last time among the Juggalos.
